None of those details belongs to the public history of the year; they belong to the family's account. Set beside a dated national portrait, those recollections give the year two scales: the world changing beyond the window, and one household learning a new name. Evidence and source treatment The 1980 census is a starting point for describing a country and community in that year. This is an illustrative excerpt with invented personal circumstances.
